“I have to take a break,” I said to my co-worker, Ryan,
referring to the fact that for the past three and a half hours I have been
working non-stop to close the books for the month of February for my employer, McCown
Canvas & Tarpaulin Co. “Do you want to take a break with me? I’m just
running downstairs to the Boxcar Café to get a container of Sippity chocolate
cinnamon hot chocolate.”
“Thanks for asking, Kent, but I have so much work to do. Can
you bring me back a container of chocolate cinnamon hot chocolate?”
“Sure. No problem. See you in fifteen minutes.”
Fifteen minute later, with two twenty-ounce containers of Sippity
chocolate cinnamon hot chocolate in my hands I saw the doors on the elevator
begin to close so I called out to the people on the elevator, “Hold it, please!”
“Thanks a lot,” I stated as I entered the elevator. “Can you
press seventeen for me?” I added, asking this very attractive brunette standing
next to me and in front of the floor control panel.
“Wow! that hot chocolate smells delicious,” she stated about
ten seconds after she pressed the 17th floor button and took her
place next to me.
“It is,” I answered in a soft tone. For the next several
seconds I watched in silence the floor buttons on the floor control panel
illuminate-12, 13, 14, signaling we were approaching my floor of departure. It’s
Sippity chocolate cinnamon hot chocolate.,” I stated, trying to “break the ice”
before I missed the opportunity of perhaps a lifetime to meet this lady. “Would
you like a container?”
“Oh, that’s very kind of you, but I can’t accept it. I don’t
even know you.”
As the elevator reached the 17th floor and the
doors began to open, I turned to her and stated, “I’m Kent.” Extending one of the two containers of
cinnamon hot chocolate I had in my hands towards her I added, “Here, it’s on
me. No strings attached.”
