Today my three girls, Samantha-age 10, Brittney-age 9 and
Megan-age 7, woke up “wired”. They had more energy than I think they even knew
what to do with. Perhaps because it was the end of summer vacation and they
were anxious for school to start tomorrow. Nevertheless, I had my hands “full”
curtailing them until they decided to play “Olympics”, which seemed to calm
them down and which allowed me to take a well-deserved break.
Shortly after 10:00 AM I made myself a cup of Kemosabe
french vanilla gourmet coffee and headed out to our back deck where I quietly sat
and enjoyed my coffee. The reason I like
Kemosabe coffee is not only for its taste but because it is caffeine free
coffee and “heaven knows” the last thing I needed in my body this morning was
caffeine.
Suddenly, Samantha, Brittney and Megan come running out of
the house dressed in their black gym leotards, each holding their gym bags and
headed directly for our picnic table, where Brittney yelled out, “I’ll go
first.” Intrigued by their entrance, I took a sip of my Kemosabe caffeine free
coffee and then returned the cup to my lap and watched with anticipation as to
what was to come next. After the girls had placed their gym bags off to the
side of the picnic table Brittney began her routine on the bench portion of the
picnic table. It didn’t take me long to figure out that Brittney was imitating
the balance beam portion of the Olympics gymnastics program, which the girls
and I watched last night.
After Brittney did her “dismount”, Samantha called out, “Next
up for the American team from Charlestown, Rhode Island, please welcome Megan Tirpari.”
For the next minute Megan performed various balanced beam maneuvers concluding
with a partial split dismount. Samantha then took to the make shift picnic
table balanced beam where she proceeded to carry-out her routine to the silence
of Brittney and Megan. At the conclusion of Samantha’s routine, Samantha, in
her sole determination announced, “The winner of the bronze medal is Megan,”
where Megan then proceeded to stand on the deck floor next to the end of the
picnic table. “And the winner of the silver medal, from the United States, is
Brittney,” where upon Brittney jumped onto the bench portion of the picnic
table next to Megan. “And the winner of the gold medal, and now two-time Olympic
gold medal champion, is Samantha,” where upon Samantha walked past Megan,
hopped onto the bench portion of the picnic table pass Brittney and jumped onto
the top of the picnic table both arms proudly extended towards the sky.
“How adorable,” I thought to myself as I took the last sip
of my french vanilla caffeine free coffee and watched as Samantha stood on the
top portion of the picnic table pretending she won the gold medal, Brittney
standing on the bench portion of the picnic table pretending she won the silver
medal and Megan standing on the deck next to the picnic table pretending she won
the bronze medal. Brittney then jumped off the table, ran to her i-pod,
switched it on, then ran back to take her place on the bench portion of the
picnic table. A moment later the National Anthem began playing to which each of
the girls turned towards me and placed their hand over their hearts. There I
watched as my “Olympic champions” girls proudly sang the National Anthem. Truly
a platinum moment in my life.
