While all the kids were enjoying themselves at my son, Kane’s,
seventh birthday pool party, I could tell from the mother’s actions, or should
I say lack of actions, that they were not. They were simply sitting around my
outdoor table making “small talk” as they watched their kids play in the pool.
I knew I had to do something to motivate them to have more interaction or they
would leave bored. I knew just the thing.
“Here ladies,” I stated as I emerged onto the patio holding
a tray containing six glasses. “I thought you would enjoy a nice cold
refreshing iced pumpkin spice flavored hot chocolate,” I added as I placed the
tray on the table.
“Pumpkin spice?” one of the ladies curiously asked. “I thought
that was only popular in the fall?”
“That’s just a myth,” I replied, handing each of them a
sixteen-ounce glass of iced pumpkin spice flavored hot chocolate. “I drink it
all year. Hot in the autumn and winter and iced on hot summer days like today.”
“Wow!” one of the mom’s enthusiastically stated after she
had taken her first sip. “This is really good,” she added.
“Oh my goodness, Leslie, this is absolutely delicious,
another of the moms stated.
“I would never have thought to make pumpkin spice flavored
hot chocolate over ice,” another of the mom’s stated.
For the next half-hour the woman enjoyed their iced pumpkin
spice flavored hot chocolate, while conducting an array of conversations about
every subject you could imagine-politics, kid’s clothes, school, summer
vacation, husbands, fall football and family. Who would have ever thought that
iced pumpkin spice flavored hot chocolate could have been such a conversation
