For the past two months my theatre class has been working
hard preparing for their high school year end play, Jersey Boys. The entire
cast is excited as they feel all the pieces of the play coming together. They
know that I am a perfectionist when it comes to the preparation of the sets,
but today I couldn’t help myself, when despite me telling the students to paint
a wall in the opening scene brown, they painted it tan.
“You had better cool off, Barry,” my colleague, Lynda stated
to me grabbing me by the arm and pulling me away from the two students who had
painted the wall tan. “They’re only students,” she added. “Cut them a break,
Barry! It’s only a wall. It can be repainted.”
“OK, everybody,” Lynda called out to the set creators, “Let’s
take a twenty-minute break.” She then turned to me and suggested, “Why don’t we
go across the street to the Third Avenue Café and get some iced hot chocolate.”
“That sounds like a good idea. I love chocolate marshmallow
iced hot chocolate. And I need to get out of here.”
Ten minutes later Lynda and I were comfortably seated in the
Third Avenue Café, me drinking a Sippity chocolate marshmallow iced hot
chocolate and Lynda enjoying her chocolate raspberry iced hot chocolate. “You
know, Barry, you've got to learn to control yourself. You can’t yell at the kids
like you did back there.”
“I know, Lynda. The entire cast worked so hard on rehearsing
their lines and making their costumes and the set guys couldn’t even paint the
wall the color I told them. It got me upset.”
“Now, Barry, cool off. Finish your iced hot chocolate and
then go back inside and apologize to those boys.”
“You’re right Lynda. I owe them an apology. Let’s go,” I
stated as I took the last sip of my chocolate marshmallow iced hot chocolate.
