Today our nine-year-old son, Carson, is competing in his
first fourth of July box car derby contest. For the past month I helped Carson
build his car, which he painted his favorite colors green with yellow trim. He
put the number 22 on the car after the date in the month he was born. When I
say I helped Carson build his car, I didn’t actually assemble the car for him I
instructed him on how to use my tools and measure and cut various pieces of
wood.
“I’ll back the truck up into the driveway,” I called out to
Carson as I placed the container of iced chocolate cinnamon flavored hot
chocolate I was drinking into the cup holder in the trucks console, referring
to my Ford F-150 truck which I wanted to position at such an angle that we
could roll Carson’s box car into the bay of the truck. “Easy does it,” I stated
to Carson as we began to push his box car up the two ramps, which I had
suspended from the tail gate of the truck so we could push his car into the bay
of my truck.
“How beautiful,” my wife stated as she came out of the house
and saw Carson’s box car in the bay of my truck. “I’m so proud of you Carson,”
she added, as she opened the passenger’s door to get into the truck.
Moments later we were on our way to Broadway and Unicom
Street the starting point for the race. “What’s in the container?” my wife
asked.
“Sippity iced chocolate cinnamon flavored hot chocolate,” I
replied.
“That sounds good. Can I have some?”
“Of course.”
“Humm, this is delicious,” she started as she returned the
container of iced chocolate cinnamon hot chocolate to the cup holder after
taking a sip.”
Over the course of the twenty-minute drive to the starting
point of the race my wife and I gave words of encouragement to Carson while we
alternated taking sips from the container of iced chocolate cinnamon flavored
hot chocolate.
To make a long story short, Carson placed second in the
first heat for his age bracket, which qualified him for the finals. Forty-five
minutes later Carson won his race, edging out his best friend Troy by a half of
car length. After my wife got done smothering Carson with kisses and hugs, I
simply said to him, “Enjoy the moment.”
