Today I am so excited because I start my first teaching job
at the Sandra Day-O’Conner Middle School in Glendale, Arizona this after
graduating from the University of Arizona three months earlier with a BS in
American history. I was told report at 7:15 AM for about a one-hour orientation
from the principal before the day was to begin. I decided to surprise my
co-workers by bringing them two boxes of my favorite coffee, Kemosabe flavored gourmet
coffee.
I arrived at the orientation room about a half hour early so
that the extra time would permit me to properly set-up the assortment of pastries
I bought a half hour earlier from Cindy’s Bakery and display the five flavors
that came in each of the Kemosabe gourmet coffee flavored collection boxes-mocha,
chocolate cinnamon, chocolate hazelnut, chocolate Irish cream and French
vanilla.
“Wow! That’s some set-up,” I heard from a man who just
entered the room from behind me. “I’m Jack Liebermann,” he said as he
approached with his hand extended towards mine. “I teach seventh grade pre-algebra.”
“Nice to make your acquaintance,” I stated as I shook his
hand. “I’m Doug Sweeney. I’ll be teaching eighth grade American history,” I
added with excitement in my voice.
“Well, Doug, you certainly know how to make an entrance,”
Jack stated as he reviewed the display of pastry and Kemosabe gourmet coffee
envelopes. “Kemosabe gourmet coffee,” he curiously stated as he picked up an
envelope of chocolate hazelnut gourmet coffee. “Boy, does this smell delicious,”
he added after he had smelled the envelope. “Is it instant?”
“Yes,” I replied. “Here, Jack, let me make a cup for you,” I
stated as I removed the top cup from the stack of styroform cups on the table. “You
just add 8 ounces of water, then microwave for 90 seconds.”
Ninety-seconds later I removed the cup from the microwave,
placed in on the table with the display of pastries and coffee and said, “Now
you simply rip open the gourmet coffee envelope, add its content to the
container, stir and Walla, you have the most delicious cup of chocolate
hazelnut gourmet coffee you probability ever had. Enjoy, I stated as I handled
the styroform cup to Jack.
“Wow! This is delicious, Doug,” Jack stated after he had
taken the first sip of his chocolate hazelnut gourmet coffee. “Something tells
me that we are going to become good friends this year,” Jack added as he
slapped his hand on my back. “Good luck this year,” he added, as I turned to
greet another one of my new colleagues.
