“Lori, can you come in for a few minutes,” my boss, Mr.
Andersen, called out to me from his office.
“Sure thing, Mr. Andersen. Just give me a minute to finish
posting these last few journal entries and I’ll be right in.” Five minutes
later I walked into Mr. Andersen’s office holding in one hand a note pad and in
the other a half full container of Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon instant coffee. “What’s
up?” I politely asked as I took my seat on the opposite side of his desk and
placed my container of instant coffee on the edge of his desk.
“Wow! That coffee smells delicious,” he stated. “What kind
is it?”
“It’s Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon instant coffee.”
“Next time you go downstairs to the coffee shop can you get
me a container?”
“Sure.”
“Lori, the reason I called you in is because I have a
project for you. Our company’s accounting chart of accounts needs to be update
and I thought since you’re new to the department this would be a good project
for you to work on to fully understand all the line items that comprise our
financial statements.”
“I would love to work on it,” I enthusiastically replied as
I reached for the container of chocolate cinnamon instant coffee. “Last year,
when I was in college, I actually worked on preparing a mock chart of accounts
as a project for our advance accounting class,” I added.
“Well then you know that a chart of accounts lists all the
proper names of the accounts that make up the company’s general ledger?”
“Yes.”
“Well here’s the project.” For the next ten minutes Mr.
Andersen went over the scope of the project, while I listened intently and
drink my instant coffee. “Why don’t we meet up around 11 AM to see how you’re
doing?
“Oh what a pleasant surprise,” Mr. Andersen stated when I walked
into his office at 11 AM holding a folder containing the contents of the work I
did on the chart of accounts project and a container of Kemosabe chocolate
cinnamon instant coffee in the other, which I gave to him.
“So how’s the project going? he asked as he popped open the
lid of the container of instant coffee.
“So far I’ve update the cash, receivable and investment
accounts. Would you like to review my work?”
“Yes, if you don’t mind.” For the next fifteen minutes Mr.
Andersen reviewed my work as he occasionally took sips for the container of
Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon instant coffee I brought him. Suddenly, he leaned
back in his chair, took off his glasses and said, “Excellent work, Lori. But
there is one thing that is off the charts.”
“What’s that? Mr. Andersen, I reluctantly asked.
“This Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon instant coffee,” he
jokingly replied as he held up the container of coffee. “It’s the best flavored
instant coffee I think I ever had.”
