“You know, Mom, I just can’t get rid of Sugar,” my daughter sadly
stated as she held the teddy bear she had since she was a little girl named,
sugar.
“I know, honey, but that’s part of growing up,” I replied in
a concerned tone. “Moving away from home is hard,” I added, referring to Ashley
leaving home in two days for her first job six-hundred miles away. “You have to
learn to part with things that you have outlived and out grown otherwise you’ll
need a big house to store it all.”
“But this is Sugar, Mom. I slept with her every day since I
can remember until the day I left for college four years ago.”
“This is exactly what I’m talking about. Besides, look at
the condition she’s in. Her arm is missing, her nose is missing and one eye is
missing, and the seams running along her side are rotten and coming apart.
“I know it time to say goodbye, but this is hard,” Ashley
replied as she hugged Sugar tightly rocking her side to side.
“I’ll leave you and Sugar to yourselves for a few minutes,”
I stated. “Why don’t I make you a nice tall glass of iced sugar free hot
chocolate?” I suggested since I know Ashley enjoys Sippity Lite chocolate
raspberry ice sugar fee hot chocolate.
“That would be great, Mom,” Ashley replied as I left the
room with her still rocking Sugar in her arms.
Ten minutes later I returned to Ashley’s bedroom with two
glasses of chocolate raspberry iced diet sugar free hot chocolate. “Where’s
Sugar?” I asked, as I handed her the glass of iced hot chocolate.
“I wrapped her in bubble wrap and put her in this old shoe
box that had some of my notes from my Economics 101 class,” Ashley stated as
she hugged the box tightly in her arms with a tear in her eye. “You’re right,
Mom, it’s time to move on,” she added as she took a sip form the glass of
chocolate raspberry iced sugar free hot chocolate I had given her. “So long
Sugar,” she emotionally stated as she got up and walked towards the garbage bin
with tears now running down her face. “I’ll always love you,” she whispered as
she gently placed the box in the garbage bin.
