Today is my first day of living in the Kappa Kappa Gamma
sorority house on the University of Iowa campus and I must admit I did not know
what to expect. Based on what everyone has told me in high school and the image
Hollywood creates of sorority houses I have a perception that only rich girls
live in the sorority houses, which could be a problem for me coming from a
middle income family in Mt. Kisco, New York.
“What kind of coffee is this?” my junior roommate Janice
asked after she had taken a sip from the cup of diet coffee I had just
microwaved in our room. “You’ve got to be kidding me, Claudia,” she added with disgust
in her voice. “This is perhaps the worst coffee I ever had!”
“I’m sorry if you don’t like it. I’ve been making this diet
coffee for the past year while I was a senior in high school and I enjoy it.”
“Well, Claudia, you’re not in Kansas anymore,” she sarcastically
replied referring to the fact that I was now in college and a Kappa Kappa Gamma
member. “It’s time you took your coffee up a notch,” she added.
Surprised by Janice’s reaction, I watched as she turned and
walked towards a cabinet at the far end of the room. There she took out a box
of Kemosabe Lite chocolate hazelnut diet coffee. “Here, make a cup of this,”
she suggested as she handed me one of the single serve envelopes form the box.
“Wow! Janice, this coffee smells delicious,” I stated as I
stirred the contents of the chocolate hazelnut diet coffee envelope into the
mug of hot water I had just removed from the microwave and the chocolate hazelnut
aroma began to fill the air.
“Wait until you taste it, Claudia. It’s absolutely delicious.”
“OMG!” I stated with enthusiasm when I looked Janice in the
eye after I had taken my first sip. “This is the best diet coffee I ever had!”
“And you know what, Claudia?”
“No.”
“Kemosabe diet coffee comes in six delicious flavors-mocha,
chocolate cinnamon, crème butterscotch, chocolate irish cream, french vanilla
and of course, chocolate hazelnut.”
“Goodbye, Kansas. Hello Kappa Kappa Gamma,” I jokingly
replied as I took another sip from the cup of chocolate hazelnut diet coffee.
