“I’ll tell you, Monica, it sure is cold out tonight,” my
husband, Kurt, stated after he returned home from a boy scout meeting with our
son, Roger on a cold, 13-degree, night in early April. “Roger and I are
freezing,” he added. “Do you have any of that Sippity chocolate marshmallow hot
cocoa mix left?”
“Actually, I do,” I replied, as I started to walk towards my
kitchen pantry. “Here it is,” I stated aloud as I reached in and pulled the box
of Sippity chocolate marshmallow mix from the pantry.
“Oh, good, Mom,” Roger stated with enthusiasm. “I’ll be down
in five minutes. I’m going to put on my PJ’s.”
“Perfect, Roger. Your chocolate marshmallow hot cocoa should
be ready by then.”
For the next five minutes Kurt filled me in on the subjects
discussed at the boy scouts meeting, while I prepared the chocolate marshmallow
hot cocoa. The big issue was should the troop continue as planned with its overnight
camping trip this weekend since the rather unusual cold spell we are currently
experiencing is forecasted to continue into early next week. Living in Englewood’s
Cliffs, New Jersey it is exceptionally rare that we get a cold spell this late in
the early spring, let alone two snow storms in the past week. “So, Kurt, what
did the troop decide? Are you going on the overnight this weekend?”
“Yeah, we’re going,” Kurt replied, as I handed him a toasty
warm mug of Sippity chocolate marshmallow hot cocoa. “This is a guy thing,
Monica. Guys love it when they’re faced with harsh environmental conditions.”
“Oh, I get it Kurt. And to show the boy scouts just how macho
you and the other fathers are, I bet you’re going to show them how you chop
wood in ten-degree weather with just a T-shirt on. For the next minute Kurt sat
quiet drinking his marshmallow hot cocoa.
“So Roger,” I began as I handed my son his mug of
marshmallow hot cocoa. “Your father tells me that the troop is still planning
it overnight this weekend despite the cold weather.”
“Yeah, I’ll really looking forward to it. And you know what else,
Mom, Mr. Sullivan and dad are going to teach us how to chop wood.”
Upon hearing Rogers statement, I burst out with laughter.
“What’s so funny, Mom?”
“Nothing Roger. Nothing. I hope you and your father have a
wonderful weekend together. I’ll be here sitting in my recliner next to the
fire drinking the rest of this delicious chocolate marshmallow hot cocoa.”
