“Hi Debbie,” I said to my best friend when I called her on
Friday night to see if she would come with me tomorrow to choose an apartment. “I
have already narrowed my search down to three apartments,” I added then describing
each. “I’m so undecided and I need your opinion and support.”
The next morning Debbie arrived promptly at my apartment where
I had been in the kitchen making myself a cup of chocolate cinnamon Kemosabe
instant coffee. “Boy, that coffee sure smells delicious?” she asked.
“Would you like some? It’s Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon
instant coffee,” I stated.
“Yes please. That would be nice. Where did the name Kemosabe
come from?”
“It means trusted friend. Here, read the back of the box,” I
answered as I handed the box to Debbie. “It explains the meaning of the name in
more detail.”
“For the next three minutes Debbie sat quietly at my kitchen
table reading the back of the Kemosabe box then replied, “Kemosabe. Trusted
friend. I’ll have to remember that.
“So, I as I told you last night today we are going to see
three apartments that I like but can’t decide on,” I stated as I poured eight
ounces of water into a mug and placed in into the microwave. “As my best
friend, I value your opinion.”
“So, Cindy, what exactly are you looking for?”
“Location to work, shopping, night life and obviously the
rent has to be affordable.”
“How much rent can you afford?”
“$1650 a month plus $350 for utilities,” I replied, as I ripped
open the Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon instant coffee single serve envelope and
poured its contents into the hot water. “My dilemma is that the apartment I
really like is a thirty-five-minute drive to work,” I added as I stirred the
chocolate cinnamon instant coffee into the cup of hot water. A few seconds
later I handed Debbie the cup of instant coffee.
“This coffee sure smells delicious,” Debbie stated as she
rose the cup to her nose for a smell. “OMG, Cindy, this is the best cup of
instant coffee I think I ever had,” she added after she had taken her first
sip.
For the next twenty minutes I explained in detail the pros
and cons of each apartment as we enjoyed our chocolate cinnamon instant coffee.
“Well we had better get going,” I stated. “I told the broker we would meet him
at the first apartment on Milrose Street in fifteen minutes.
To make a long story short, Debbie was a tremendous help in
pointing out various things I overlooked in my apartment decision making
process. Nevertheless, I decided on a two-bedroom apartment for $1600,
utilities included, which was just a ten-minute walk from work. To celebrate, I
sent Debbie two boxes of Kemosabe chocolate cinnamon instant coffee with a short note enclosed
that began with the words, “Hey Kemosabe”.
