Five years ago I graduated from Bethany College, a small
liberal arts college nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny mountains in the
northern panhandle of West Virginia about thirty miles from Wheeling, West Virginia.
This Saturday is homecoming, and has been the case in each of the past five
years, my college buddies and I re-unite for the football game, this year
against Carnegie Mellon.
“Hey Jackie, what are you bringing to the tail-gating party
on Saturday?” Troy, my old roommate asked.
“Well, because they are forecasting a rather gloomy day, light
rain with a temperature in the high forty’s, I thought I would bring a twenty-five
box of Kemosabe single serve coffee packets, so that we can keep warm.”
“You’re getting soft on me, Jackie,” Troy replied. “I’ve
arranged for two kegs of beer.”
To make a long story short, Saturday arrived and as
forecasted it was drizzling with a temperature of forty-six degrees. When I
arrived at the tail-gating gathering virtually all of my old college buddies
were standing around blowing onto their hands in an effort to keep warm.
Without even saying, “Nice to see you, or how have you been”, Billy, a close
friend from college stated, “Thank goodness you’re here. Troy told us you were
bringing a box of Kemosabe single serve coffee packets. Is that it?” referring
to the box I had under my arm.
“Nice to see you again too, Troy,” I sarcastically replied,
as I tossed him the box of single serve coffee packets. Ten minutes after Troy
had taken the box of single serve coffee packets from me, one friend after the
next came up to me, each holding a container of Kemosabe flavored gourmet
coffee in hands, and thanked me for bringing the box of single serve coffee
packets. Written by Bob Jenkins, Founder & Chief Executive Officer of
